Why don't Cicilians admit they're Italian?

Cicily is in Italy, so wouldn't that mean that if you're Sicilian you are Italian? So why do Sicilians get so bent out of shape if you say they are Italian? Like if you say something about them being Italian, they'll always correct you and say, "I'm not Italian, I'm Sicilian."
